The Struggle of Devotions
Doing daily devotions is difficult. It is a struggle at some point in life for every Christian. For me, the struggle is now. The most important response to your struggle is humbleness. Making excuses is a waste of time. God should be our primary and most important focus in our lives, and by not doing devotions, we are refusing to give Him the time and respect and love that He deserves.
The real battle is not just to do devotions, but to do them right, with the right attitude, and to long for the Lord and His Word. How do you make yourself want to do devotions, and not fall into the sin of reading the Bible just to check it off your list? The answer begins with prayer.
"We cannot attain to the understanding of Scripture either by study or by strength of intellect. Therefore your first duty must be to begin with prayer."
- Martin Luther
Start your devotion time by asking God to grant you wisdom and longing for Him and His Word.
Another tip is to keep a daily journal. This can start out as really annoying, but you don't have to journal. Just keep track of what you read each day. Eventually, you will be able to look back and see your growth from one day a week to six, and so on.
Remember also that every Christian deals with the same struggles.
"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful, He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." - 1 Corinthians 10:13
